Senator Godswill Akpabio, a former governor of Akwa Ibom state and Nigeria’s Senate minority leader, made Nigerians talking after a controversial photo report emerged on Saturday, April 2, showing the politician on board a private helicopter.

According to information by SaharaReporters, he used the chopper to attend the thanksgiving service of Senator Mao Ohuabunwa following his victory at the just-concluded Abia North Senatorial re-run election.

The event took place at the All Saints Cathedral Church, Arochukwu, Abia state.

“I am from Akwa Ibom state. Godswill Akpabio totally decapitated our state. The stooge that he forced on the state is borrowing almost on a weekly basis. He cannot even pay salaries. Akpabio did not use more than 40% of the allocations he received to develop the state,” Inibehe Effiong wrote upon seeing the photos.

A Facebook user Igwe Ndukwe said: “Let me set the record straight. I’m into airline services. Firstly, there is no airport in Abia state and the closest is in Owerri and is quite far to Arochukwu. Arochukwu is a remote village in Abia state. Moreover, hiring of 14 – 18 capacity seater chopper is about three million Naira. Are we saying a Senate minority leader and a former governor chattering chopper service to attend an event in a remote village is corruption?”

Daleehat Suleiman Bente opined: “The man’s second name is corruption, no doubt… And he is happily sitting as the minority leader of the Senate?? Shame to pdpigs, wailing wailers.”

It would be recalled that the use of private aircraft is a common thing for the VIP Nigerians. Earlier this week, Dolapo Osinbajo, the wife of the vice president, traveled to Benue to donate rice and other relief materials to the people affected by communal clashes.

The use of aircraft is often justified by long distances which have to be covered and the state of the Nigerian roads that does not allow safe and fast travelling.
