Two killed as cultists clash in Ondo carnival

No fewer than two persons reportedly lost their lives while many other people were injured when some suspected cultists clashed  during a carnival organised by some youths in Kogbona street in Ondo town, Ondo State on Monday evening.

According to an eyewitness, the bloody clash was between two rival cult groups in the community, saying the deceased whose identities were not yet disclosed were members of the cult groups.

The eyewitness narrated that the crisis broke out when some youths in the community were holding a procession on the street as part of the celebration when some boys suspected to be cultists emerged at a spot and disrupted the procession.

” The cultists were shot continuously into the air to disperse those having the procession, it was during the process that the cultists among those celebrating retaliated. It was later we learnt that two people died,” the eyewitness said.

However, the situation was said to have been brought under control following the quick intervention of the police from Enuowa division, Ondo.

When contacted on Tuesday, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Femi Joseph, confirmed the incident but said only one person lost his life.

He also said the incident occurred on Friday and not on Monday and two people had been arrested in connection with the incident.

According to the PPRO, the suspects were, Tosin Omosikeji and Tope Akinpelumi, adding that the police were still on the trail of many other persons who allegedly had connection with the incident.

He said, ” We have commenced investigation on the matter and we will ensure that all those people who were involved in the clash are arrested.”

It was gathered that the remains of the deceased had been deposited at the morgue of the state specialists’ hospital in Ondo town, while the injured were receiving treatment at various private hospitals in the town.
